Location, location, location… The Marais

The Marais was the dream location for our client.

Having visited Paris many times over the years, this area in the 4th arrondissement (district) was top of the list.

But what is the attraction of the Marais? It’s really not hard to explain.

A trendy and romantic corner of the city, it’s packed with charm thanks to its cobblestone streets, designer boutiques, chic hotels, and gourmet food shops. There are also a wealth of restaurants and bars around virtually every corner.

The Marais has a village feel and was actually built on marshland (‘marais’ in French), hence its name. It is one of the few areas in Paris that was not renovated during the Haussmann era, preserving much of its original charm.

It’s like a picture-postcard of Paris, and both tourists and Parisians love to visit here. There are many 17th-century mansions and dozens of historic landmarks. This includes the Hôtel de Ville and the Place des Vosges, the city’s oldest square.

A property with wow factor

Our client had quite a journey buying an apartment in Paris. But the property they successfully purchased was entirely worth it.

It’s a 1,900 square foot apartment, sitting on the French 2nd floor of a period building in the heart of the Marais.

It has the wow factor, thanks to a very high-end and thorough renovation that has added a chic, modern touch to the apartment. But it retains all the original Parisian building features such as herringbone hardwood flooring, moldings, and French windows.

The apartment has a spacious living and dining room, along with three bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom. This was top of the list for the client, and makes it a rare find, especially in the Marais. Finally, there are walk-in closets, an eat-in kitchen and a laundry room.

The apartment overlooks two large courtyards and the street below. It has triple exposure, sky views, and plenty of natural light.

And finally, there’s that great location. It’s a short walk to the Place des Vosges, or the bustling rue de Bretagne and Enfants Rouges farmers’ market. While shops, cafés, and restaurants, as well as the Picasso Museum, are all nearby.

A note about French first and second floors

Our client’s apartment sits on the third floor of the building. But in France, and throughout Europe, that is considered to be the second floor.

Why? There is a key difference in the way we number floors.

Here, the floor at street level is counted as floor zero. So by walking up the stairs or taking the elevator, you will reach the first floor.

This means when in France, the floor number is always one number lower than the same floor would be in the US.
